Trial of mass testing for COVID-19 to start in Liverpool
From Friday, a whole city mass Coronavirus testing pilot will be launched in Liverpool – using the latest technology to get the virus under control.
- To respond to coronavirus, the largest testing system in British history has been built, and further work is being done constantly to expand and improve it so we can use the latest mass testing technologies to get the virus under control.
- Starting on Friday, the government will launch the first deployment of whole city testing, offering everyone living or working in Liverpool coronavirus tests, whether they have symptoms or not. This will help to find more positive cases and break chains of transmission – in a city that has one of the highest rates in the country.
- This is made possible by the dramatic increase in testing capacity – and at the weekend the target was met to hit daily COVID-19 test capacity of 500,000 by the end of October. The government will continue to expand capacity to improve test turnaround times, and push forward testing innovations to make sure anyone who needs a test can get one.
