Youtube footage of storm hitting Whitehaven Harbour

This footage was uploaded to Youtube by Sean Duffy and shows last week's Force 11 gale hitting the harbour walls at Whitehaven.

Hydraulic action is one of the strongest forces on the planet, and this shows why: I don't think anyone who watches this will have difficulty appreciating how the waves did considerable damage to our harbour.

I have often wondered about the hydraulic power involved in the tide.

Not just a tide like that, but the way i see things, would you say a million gallons of water to fill the outer harbour? - I have no idea, but anyway lets say thats right just for the sake of it.

So a million gallons comes in and then a million gallons goes out and it does this twice each and every single day.

so the way i see things is a wall blocking the harbour entrance, then water inlets in the wall, with spirally shaped water turbines would be a much better idea than these windmills, and much more reliable. now we dont need to block of the harbour, but another pier to the right of north pier (tide area behind tesco) and a power wall connecting it to north pier would give the same effect, then perhaps another going out in the direction of saltom bay.

Tidal power is potentially a far better source of renewable energy than wind power can ever be.

It is perfectly predictable when it will be available, with complete reliability, and the energy involved in the movement of water is considerably greater than with the movement of air.

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died.
