Don't lose your vote

If you want to be able to vote in any elections , scheduled or otherwise, over the period of the next electoral register, don't forget to register to vote.

Copeland Borough Council sent out the registration form this week and other local authorities will be doing the same about now.

I certainly never imagined when I registered this time last year that there would be two parliamentary elections - a by-election and a general election - to vote for in the period covered by that registration.

Why do we have to register to vote each and every year? Why cant they just use council tax information, i cant see any point to it.

Also why do you have to register every year even though nothing has changed, I could understand if things do change like someone approaches voting age, someone moves in or moves out, but the current system seems incredibly wasteful, as I say especially when they already have this information for council tax purposes.

The system we have now is not perfect but the people who passed the laws requiring an annual register believed that this method would minimise electoral fraud.

I would certainly not argue that it could not be improved but I don't think scrapping a separate electoral register and annual check would be a good idea.
