Anzac day
The units which served with great bravery on the Allied side in the Gallipoli campaign included regiments and formations from Australia, New Zealand, Lancashire, Ireland, India, and I understand there was also a largely Jewish unit.
I have a personal interest in the contribution from the Lancashire Fusiliers, because my Great-Uncle was killed later in the war serving in the same regiment.
The Lancashire Fusiliers famously won "six VCs before breakfast" on the first day of the Gallipoli campaign for taking all their objectives for the first day despite suffering dreadful casualties - two thirds of the battalion becoming casualties in that 24-hour period.
The Allied soldiers from around the world who took part in that campaign showed great courage and determination in the face of enormous adversity and terrible losses.
We will remember them.
