More cash for superfast broadband in Cumbria
Declaration of interest - I work for BT so of course I'm going to say the announcement that BT is putting another £2.5 million into the rollout of Superfast Broadband in Cumbria is great news.
But that doesn't mean it isn't good news for homes and businesses in remote parts of the country who are waiting for faster online services.
The News and Star reports today here that BT is making the money available to extend Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) projects across the country. The money will go to Cumbria County Council to reinvest in providing additional superfast broadband coverage to homes and businesses earlier than originally planned.
Councillor David Southward, the authority’s cabinet member responsible for economic development, said:
“This money is a bit like a reward for delivering superfast fibre broadband on track and on time and surpassing the original expectations on how many people will be signing up to fibre.
“It looks like we’re going to burst through that 20 per cent take-up figure into around a third of properties, so BDUK are allowing us to reinvest even more money into getting to more of the hardest to reach properties.”
Steve Edwards, BT Group director for NGA clients, added:
“The fibre broadband roll-out is a real success story, and we’re delighted to be able to share that success with Cumbria by making £2.5 million available to help connect some of the hardest to reach homes and businesses."

I wanted fibre for ages, I waited and waited for ages to get it on Mirehouse. Then I bought this place which had it (being a new house and all it would really). Anyway as it happened I contacted BT to activate the phone line and infinity wifi and telly. great.
then in the time i had to wait to get it connected, mirehouse had it 3 weeks earlier. Just my blooming luck :)
On a side note, its odd how people have different experiences with different people, for example I really liked Tiscali, who I was with for years, but then they were taken over by Talk Talk and they went downhill fast. I tried both virgin and sky, and was just getting no where with either of them, I decided to go to BT and low and behold everything has been great since. But the odd thing is, 3 of us were discussing this at work the other day. One has Sky, One Talk Talk and me BT, (all of us having tried the other 2 companys), we all pretty much said the same thing that is "the one i am with is by far the best one, the other 2 are useless"
I just found it funny how i have never had a problem with BT but loads of people have. I had a nightmare with sky, but loads of people really rate them.
Its quite odd how this happens, But it does all the time, I guess its the same with everything (like supermarkets, fuel stations etc, but its just some how odd with something like internet connections and phone lines. It seems a bit like "i hate this server at work, the one I have never seen and dont know where it is, and dont even know its there until its not"
Its no secret that i hated windows 8 with a vengence. anyway, if you are still waiting for your upgrade to come through then don't panic HERE IS A LINK to bypass the queue, just select either the 32 or 64 bit version (which ever you are running) and there is the option to "upgrade this PC now"
So windows 10 - well its actually not bad at all on my machine, though I have heard some people say their machine struggles with it. so if its reasonably new go for it, what the heck go for it anyway if you are stuck on 8 and hate that as much as I did. If you are using 7 then I would think twice if i were you, yes, windows 10 is a lot better than 8, but its still not as good as 7 was.
Hope that helps end the windows 8 misery for at least someone :)
Incidentally this latest tranche of money is not from the taxpayer, though some of the previous investment was.
