Labour confusion on the £28 billion

For weeks the media have been suggesting that Labour was about to scrap the promise to spend £28 billion extra on their green investment plan.

On Friday based on comments from one Labour shadow cabinet member, the shadow Chief Secretary to the treasury Darren Jones (e.g. the deputy to the shadow chancellor,) the media were reporting that Labour had indeed ditched the promise.

However, there is still confusion from Labour frontbenchers on whether this is still their policy or not. Yesterday, another Labour frontbencher said they are ‘not scaling back’ their £28 billion spending spree and there appear to be splits between Sir Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves over the pledge. Labour cannot say what they will do because they do not have a plan and will take us back to square one.

  • Labour’s Chris Bryant said Labour is ‘not scaling back’ their £28 billion spending spree, showing Labour are in chaos over the policy. Labour cannot say how they would pay for their £28 billion spending spree because they do not have a plan – which will just end up meaning higher taxes on businesses and working people.
  • Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives’ plan is working with inflation more than halved and taxes cut. If we stick to the plan, we can continue to grow the economy and deliver a brighter future for you and your family.
