"Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program."

A prime example would of course be income tax.

Its a temporary measure issued by William Pitt the Younger in his budget of December 1798 and introduced in 1799, to pay for weapons and equipment in preparation for the Napoleonic Wars.

Still is a "temporary tax" and so it has to be renewed on April 5th each and every year.

One I could not leave out, was watching a "best of spitting image Maggie" program (it was on one of the zillions of sky listings channels) but the best one:

Maggie had taken the cabinet to lunch

WAITER: Are you ready to order
MAGGIE: I will have the British steak
WAITER: Very good, sir. And the vegetables?
MAGGIE: They will have the same as me.

I not only remember that episode, I also remember that the following week people around Westminster who had heard the joke repeated but hadn't seen the programme were telling the story as if it were true ...

Spitting image was such a well done unique program, that I can imagine that to be the case. Could also imagine a lot of people at home watching it as "news".

Think i was too young for that particular episode the first time, but found it funny when i did see it.

Watching the news reports of Mrs T's funeral, seems to have went quite well. Though I saw some people chanting in opposition "what a waste of money". I did wonder to myself if the irony is lost on them, one of the first people to agree with them would have been the Iron Lady herself.
Following the mess she inherited she done her upmost to stop wasting public money, she saved the country from destruction (of a financial nature).

Even following her death i could have imagined her saying (about those celebrating, "They have been poisoned by socialism, they don't know any better"
