Sunday Music Spot: the "Albinoni" Adagio
The inverted commas around the name "Albinoni" are there because there is considerable doubt about how much Tomaso Albinoni, great composer though he undoubtedly was, had to do with possibly the best and certainly the most famous piece which is usually ascribed to him.
I have previously described the circumstances in which Remo Giazotto published this delightful piece, allegedly recreated from a fragment found in the ruins of the Saxon State Library which had been damaged by Allied bombing during World War II, here.
But whoever wrote it, this is a lovely piece of music.
