Quote of the day 3rd January 2019

“People like me who are supporters of capitalism and free markets have got to stop being as complacent as we were when we put this international rules-based system together in the 1990s.”

“The next generation have got to work out how to make it work fairly and still work properly."

(Ken Clarke QC, MP, extract from an interview on "Politico," from the passages in which he reflects on the lessons which must be learned from the political havoc around the Western World which has resulted because not enough people shared in the success and prosperity brought by the free market and too many of those who didn't were hurt by its failures. Yeah, a system worked fairly and perfectly, so we interfered with it in the 90's and messed it up. The next generation have to work out the answer.

I'm afraid it's not actually obvious to me what you mean, Jim, no.

There were so many decisions taken during that era, some of which with hindsight look good and others which with hindsight look bad, that I cannot be sure which decision or which group of decisions you are referring to.

Would you like to elaborate, please?
