Fair pay for sailors
The government has announced new measures to make sure seafarers receive fair pay following P&O Ferries’ shameful conduct, ensuring that seafarers will not be priced out of their jobs.
- Someone who works out at sea should not be excluded from the protections UK workers receive.
- That is why, following the shameful conduct of P&O Ferries, the government has introduced new legislation meaning that vessels that call on UK ports at least every 72 hours on average, or more than 120 times a year, will be denied access to ports and services if they do not pay their workers the UK National Minimum Wage for time spent in UK waters.
- This will put the UK ahead of every EU state in our pay protections, and forms part of a policy to continue to protect and enhance the rights of all workers.
