Saving water

Last week the Environment Secretary met with water companies to discuss the measures they are taking to protect water supplies in the driest summer in over 50 years.

  • We are seeing the driest conditions in the UK for over 50 years. However all water companies reassured the Environment Secretary that water supplies remain resilient. It is the duty of water companies to maintain those supplies.
  • Each water company has a pre-agreed drought plan which they are following, which includes precautionary steps to protect supplies in case the dry weather continues into the autumn.
  • Britain is better prepared than ever before for periods of dry weather but the government is are actively monitoring the situation. It also remains even more important to crack down on leakage, and the government is working witb tbe water companies to ensure that tough targets to do so are set and implemented.
