Working to help patients and the NHS
The government has announced £250 million to speed up hospital discharge, safely discharging thousands of patients to free up hospital capacity and reduce the Covid backlogs.
- The NHS is under enormous pressure from Covid and flu, and on top of tackling the backlog caused by the pandemic, Strep A and upcoming strikes, this winter poses an extreme challenge.
- That is why, backed by £200 million, we are buying thousands of extra beds in care homes and other settings to help safely discharge patients – with an additional £50 million to upgrade discharge facilities in hospitals. This is on top of the £500 million Adult Social Care Discharge Fund already helping discharge people more quickly.
- Safely discharging more patients will free up hospital capacity for those who need it, ensuring patients get the care they deserve when they require it and delivering on our promise to cut the waiting lists.
This is part of a plan to help the NHS recover from COVID and other issues which have put tremendous pressure on our hard working NHS staff and increased waiting times for patients.
To keep that plan on track, last weekend the Prime Minister held a NHS Recovery Forum at Downing Street – convening health experts to focus on the issues facing the NHS and ensuring long-term improvements across the service so patients get the care they deserve.
- Innovation is crucial to solving the challenges facing the NHS and delivering long-term improvements to ensure patients can get the care they deserve no matter where they live.
- That is why the Prime Minister convened experts from across the health and care sector – focusing on four crucial issues: social care and delayed discharge; urgent and emergency care; elective care; and primary care to identify new and innovative solutions.
- We are delivering the highest spend on health and care in any government’s history and are committed to ensuring this funding busts the backlogs and helps patients right across the country – delivering on one of the Prime Minister's key priorities.
