Kells & Sandwith by-election

A reminder that tomorrow (Thursday 18th December) is polling day in the Kells and Sandwith county division for the vacant seat on Cumbria County Council.

There are three candidates, who in alphabetical order are:

Brigid Whiteside (Conservative)
Simon Nicholson (British National Party)
Wendy Skillicorn (Labour)

Polls are open from 7am to 10 pm.

For a whole host of obvious reasons I support the Conservative candidate, but I would urge any Kells and Sandwith elector who may be reading this to go to the polling station and use your right to vote, regardless of your views. This is important to help whoever is elected to do things for local residents: whichever candidate is elected has more chance of getting things done if he or she has the mandate of being positively chosen by the electors, rather than slipping in on a low turnout. It is also important to maintain and use the democracy for which so many generations have fought and died.

There are still many people in other countries who would love to have the right to vote which Kells and Sandwith residents can exercise tomorrow.

Franklin once wrote that "The Price of Liberty is eternal vigilance." Freedom costs, but the price is worth paying. All you have to pay tomorrow is a few minutes' trip to the polling station to cast your vote, and a few minutes' thought about which candidate you should vote for.

"The Price of Liberty is eternal vigilance". I agree, but all our Councillors in Copeland are asleep or drunk, whoever is elected it wont make any difference.

Well, you are entitled to your view. Obviously I don't accept that we're all asleep or drunk though there are certainly things I'd like to improve.

If you think all the existing councillors are that bad perhaps you should stand yourself, either by joining whichever party is closest to your views or setting up your own party.

Quote of the day 24th July 2020

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer. There's been plenty of nasty stuff on both sides but if you catch anyone of your own viewpoint  posting something like that who might listen to you, please do call them out on it - and point out that they're giving everyone on your side of the argument a bad name.
