Honouring our Armed Forces

In the coming week communities throughout Britain will honour the contribution made by both the current members of the forces and by veterans, and we l particularly remember those who died defending our country.

Tomorrow morning at 10.30 am the Mayor of Copeland will raise an Armed Forces flag from one of the flagpoles at St Nicholas’ Gardens in Whitehaven, and it will remain flying until after the civic service at St James' church at 2pm on Sunday June 28th. The flag will then be lowered by a veteran serviceman.

You mention those who died, but its a crying shame so many men have lost their lives for a war that we should never have been involved with.

I had my doubts at the time. Now that we know Saddam did not have WMD I find it impossible to avoid the conclusion that the invasion of Iraq was a mistake.

But there are no easy answers on this one. A lot of innocent people lost their lives in the war and subsequent events. But more than a million innocent lives were lost as a result of Saddam's actions while he was in power, either murdered by his regime or killed in the wars which began when he attacked Iran and Kuwait.

We need to learn the lessons from our mistakes in Iraq - hence the need for a more open inquiry.

Quote of the day 24th July 2020

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer. There's been plenty of nasty stuff on both sides but if you catch anyone of your own viewpoint  posting something like that who might listen to you, please do call them out on it - and point out that they're giving everyone on your side of the argument a bad name.
