Copeland Local Committee

I have been enjoying the Conservative Party conference, which is a valuable lobbying and networking opportunity, but because I will always put my constituents before party I have been back in Copeland today attending the Copeland local Committee of Cumbria County Council.

It was a useful and constructive meeting which addressed a number of issues including schools, parking, traffic schemes and health promotion and I will post a fuller report after Conference.

Shame on you all, letting a few parked cars cause chaos in the town.

Why don't you, just for once, demonstrate that you actually have a functioning spine by signing your name to one of these posts and coming up with a constructive suggestion about what the council is doing wrong and how it could be improved.

Make Low Road a clearway, end of problem.

Ok, thank you for responding to part of the challenge I gave you.

That solution would significantly reduce the problems for people passing through the relevant stretch of road. However, it would be extremely harsh on those who live along it and bought their homes on the assumption that they would be able to park there.

The long-term solution in my opinion is more road capacity. AS I said at the meeting, in the meantime we are stuck with a choice of unsatisfactory solutions.

You do not have a legal right to obstruct the public highway no matter what one assumes. In the meantime while Councillors lack courage to act, everyone suffers.

Unless the highway authority specifically prohibits parking on any given stretch of the public highway, you do have the right to park there provided it is reasonably possible for other vehicles to pass yours.

You mean you would rather sit there and do nothing than have some backbone to resolve the problem.

We agreed that we would adopt for now the solution proposed by the local councillor but that we would monitor how it works and look at other options if it doesn't. We also agreed to lobby for investment in a more strategic solution.

You would be in a better position to accuse anyone else of backbone deficiency if you had the courage to sign your name.

As I said - do nothing for another 20 years.

That isn't actually what I said or wrote.

We will be lobbying to try to get a proper strategic solution. In the meantime we have changed the parking restrictions and will monitor the new ones to see whether it helps.
