Parking in Whitehaven

The Directly Elected Mayor of Copeland called a meeting this evening to discuss parking issues in Whitehaven, which I attended.

The County, Borough, and Town councils were all represented and there were people present who could speak for residents and business interests, although one of the things which was discussed was making sure we do better at consulting a wider range of residents and businesses.

The initial issue which acted as a trigger for the meeting was the TROs (Traffic Regulation Orders) which the County Council local committee has just agreed in Whitehaven, particularly in the town centre, in terms of the loading bays, disabled parking bays, and yellow lines in the town.

However the discussion was much broader and included the need for Copeland Borough Council and Cumbria County Council to work together, preferably involving the Harbour Commissioners and Sellafield, to create and implement a parking strategy for the town which balances the interests of (in no particular order) residents, businesses, shoppers, workers and the disabled.

It this meeting gets the various levels of government working better together to address these issues it could be the start of something very positive.

and the clear answer, like I said Five years ago, but was completely ignored, is simple. The obvious place to build Albion Square is Westlakes.

Even better would have been the Marchon site, but no it had to be in the centre of town

Both ideas would have been worth considering and I regret that CBC at that time was so determined to carry out their own vision for Albion Square - which has produced many of the problems which were forecast seven or eight years ago when I was an opposition councillor on CBC while it was being planned.

Sadly they weren't considered and we now have to try to make what we have work.

is it really 7 or 8 years? shows how time flys. Though I always considered my current home to be a new build, then it hit me that I have been here almost 4 years.

I was a Copeland Councillor from 2007 to 2011 and these discussions were taking place then. So at that would have to have been at least seven years ago.

Quote of the day 24th July 2020

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer.
