Trade negotiation success for UK exports to the USA
This week the UK government negotiated a new joint approach with the USA resulting in the removal of the longstanding tariffs on UK goods such as Scotch Whiskey, Ayrshire Cashmere and Stilton from the Midlands and UK machinery – suspending these harmful export costs for British producers.
- The UK government has fought incredibly hard on this issue, petitioning the highest levels of the US administration to remove these tariffs which were harming our British exporters.
- Some people said the UK government would never make any progress on trade with the USA, or that we could only make any progress by doing unacceptable things like selling the NHS or dropping health or animal welfare standards.
- Those people were wrong. Britain has reached a deal with the US government which is good for British exporters from Scotland to the English midlands, good for British workers, and good for consumers in the USA who will be able to enjoy these great products.
- From the next week, these long standing tariffs will be suspended while we continue to work towards an ambitious trade deal with the USA. This will mean that Scotch whisky distillers, for example, will be able to make the price of their products more competitive in their most valuable market, the USA. This change will bring more sales and more money for our producers to invest in their businesses, their staff and futures.
- This agreement shows both our determination and that of the USA to work together to build back better as we continue to work towards an ambitious trade deal, which could eliminate almost £500m in tariffs on UK exports to the US
