Carbon emissions down

New figures released yesterday have shown that the UK’s CO2 emissions fell for the sixth consecutive year, demonstrating that the Conservative government is delivering on our commitment to leave the environment in a better state than we found it.

Key facts

  • Carbon Brief analysis shows the UK’s CO2 emissions fell for the sixth consecutive year in 2018, the longest series of continuous reductions on record.
  • The UK’s CO2 emissions were an estimated 361 million tonnes in 2018, some 39 per cent below 1990 levels.
  • There was an estimated 1.5 per cent reduction this year.
  • Outside years with general strikes, this would be the lowest since 1888, when the first-ever Football League match was played and Tower Bridge was being built in London.

Why this matters

Continuing to reduce emissions will ensure that we show global leadership in combating climate change, whilst leaving our natural environment in a better condition than we found it for future generations.
