"A day of shame for the British state" - PM apologises for infected blood disaster

There are no adequate words to describe how shocking and atrocious the infected blood scandal is - the original failure, the refusal to recognise it, the cover-up, and the fact that it has taken so long to get to the truth. The NHS, the civil sevice, and government ministers of all parties failed the victims and their families. Here is the apology which the Prime Minister made today.

Nothing will change - every arm of the state is blighted with the same British disease

I think we all have to think about how we got this so wrong under governments of every party. And it's not the only thing which has gone badly wrong under governments of every party as the ongoing Horizon public inquiry shows.

But the council of despair - to say everything is broken and nothing will ever change - is a recipe for ensuring it will indeed to change but in the wrong direction - if we all give up hope of ever fixing things it will only guarantee that things will indeed never improve and things will only get worse.

There are plenty of countries where the facts of these cases would never have been allowed to come out at all.

Britain is better than this, we can learn from this awful mess and move forward with a plan for positive improvements.
