Boris Johnson: we need more nuclear power and more renewables.

In his last major speech as Prime Minister, Boris Johnson made a strong pitch for nuclear power to make sure the UK has cheap, clean, reliable, and plentiful energy into the future, to reduce our exposure to the international gas market and price spikes.

The government is looking to move past the short termism which has delayed doing anything to build new nuclear plants and is proposing to step up with billions of pounds in support to help with the rising cost of energy, but our British Energy Security Strategy is not just about meeting demand today, but many years hence.

Nuclear power needs to be part of a balanced energy policy: so do renewables. I was pleased to see the support for Sizewell C. I want to see new nuclear generation in  West Cumbria and am convinced that this will happen.

Whether Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak is Prime Minister from Tuesday, he or she will build on our Energy Security Strategy to boost home-grown energy supplies and reduce our exposure to international gas price spikes by providing energy that is cheap, clean, reliable and plentiful, and made on British soil.

We will protect our future energy security to tackle global cost of living pressures and make sure that families and businesses are never again at the mercy of international markets or foreign despots.
