Replacing the Human Rights Act

Toby Young in the Speccie on the Human Rights Act:

"You'll regret not having a Human Rights Act when a left-wing government returns."

Matthew Dancona in the Guardian on the concerns of "Runnymede Tories" on the issue.

"The Human Rights Act spells peril for Cameron."

There is an important balancing act here. Labour have shown that they do not respect the unwritten rules of our original unwritten constitution.

The Conservative manifesto promise was not to leave Britain with no Bill of Rights but to have a distinctive British one.

Michael Gove will need to make sure that it is tough enough to prevent any future authoritarian government of whatever colour - like Tony Blair's for instance, which wanted to lock people up for three months without charge, and did manage to get an opposition spokesman arrested - from finding it easy to trample on the ancient liberties and freedoms of the British people.

I was never a lover of the Human Rights Act, but, having bought a new pc this weekend, I would like to see a law that declares Windows 8.1 as "a crime against humanity" :)

Just found out there is actually a facebook group called "I hate windows 8*

Joined it.

For all others in this boat its not all bad news, the good news is Windows 10 (not sure what happened to 9, probably best not to ask) anyway windows 10 will be a free upgrade from both 7 and (thank god) 8. The start menu is back and you can actually find things again apparently.

Should be available end of July/start of August.

I think I will have to join the "I hate Windows 8" group as well. Gradually getting more familiar with it but as you infer, finding things is a real pain.

Having to use Windows 8 definitely counts as "Cruel and Unusual punishment."

Yeah, its like Microsoft done a survey asking "which bits of Windows 7 did you actually like?"

When they got the replies, they promptly removed them all.

Quote of the day 24th July 2020

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer.
