Copeland Local Committee

Cumbria County Council's local committee for Copeland met today in Cleator Moor with the county councillors representing divisions in Copeland discussing the agenda items which you can find here.

The directly-elected mayor of Copeland was also present and I hope this becomes a regular feature of these meetings because one of the challenges we need to address is much greater co-operation between the different levels of local government.

Issues which I brought up included

* The playing field at Moor Row which belongs to the County Council. It is part of Moor Row school grounds and the school is looking to improve it, but the land has also in the past been leased to Copeland council for community use and it has been used by the local football club for a long time. I would like to see an arrangement made to improve the suitability of the field for the benefit of both the club and the school in the interests of both and on terms acceptable to both.

* With regard to the work to re-surface Meadow Road in Mirehouse, Whitehaven: water has been running onto the road and it would be totally unacceptable if, having spent £120,000 of taxpayer's money to resurface a road which was in a dire condition, the work were to be undone by damage from water. County Highways officers have taken this up and are working with Copeland Borough Council's flooding and drainage officers to investigate.

* Speeding on Harras Road - this has been a problem for a long time, certainly since I was a Bransty councillor. CCC Highways officers have been studying traffic speeds in various parts of Copeland including Harras Moor over the summer but there is some concern that the data collected may have understated the problem because of a road closure near the Sunny Hill which temporarily stopped the road being used as a through route. I asked if they can have another look at this.
