First UK conviction for FGM

The mother of a three-year-old child has become the first person in the UK to be convicted of the barbaric crime of Female Genital Mutilation, which she perpetrated against her own daughter.

It is terrible that in Britain today such a terrible thing could happen to a child - as it has happened to too many others - but at least a marker has been set that society will not tolerate what home secretary Sajid Javid rightly called a "medieval practice".

"We will not tolerate FGM and not rest until perpetrators of this horrific crime are brought to justice," he added.

Subsequently the Home secretary tweeted that

"I welcome this landmark conviction.

Female Genital Mutilation is a sickening, depraved, form of child abuse; we will do all we can to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice."
