Next year's Whitehaven festival secured by strong support
I've already logged about what a marvellous weekend the "Marratime" festival in Whitehaven was. I am pleased, but not surprised, to learn that the strong support for this year's festival has secured the postition of the 2013 Whitehaven festival which had until the "Glorious First of June" this year been in the balance.
In these difficult times this was a boost that the town of Whitehaven really needed and I am pleased that the work which a lot of people have put into the Festival has been rewarded. I certainly had the impression that a lot of people were emjoying themselves so hopefully they will come again next year.

Also was pleased that the Olympic torch will be calling on the town too.
Whilst these events are welcome and are very good news for the town, there needs to be a lot more done on the basics. I'm talking better access to the town, better parking, Revised business rates, public facilities etc.
this would then attract business back to Whitehaven, this attracts more people, which attracts more business, which attracts still more people....
basically a line of charity shops, with the odd store between them.
Tesco is not so bad, but morrisons (the supermarket i prefer) is a nightmare to exit, which also drags down the shops on the left as you go in.
Usually if i want something, then i tend to drive to workington. Now the bypass is open its fast to get there, the multi story is safe and does not smell of urine, there are shops I want to visit, the outskirts are also better. You have morrisons (one you can normally actually get out of) which attracted B&Q, comet, dunelm etc.
Im a "marra" through and through, but these are simple lessons, and lessons that need to be learned.
