"Marratime Festival" in Whitehaven this weekend

Whitehaven Maritime Festival 2013 begins ...

One of Cumbria's biggest regular events, the Whitehaven Maritime Festival (sometimes humorously known as the "Marratime Festival" takes place this weekend.

There is an absolutely fantastic programme which starts this evening (Friday 21st June) and continues through to Sunday and includes Titan the Robot (billed as quite literally the biggest entertainer on the planet), Xtreme action jet skis, and nightlight pyrotechnics fireworks on Friday and Saturday. Artists booked to appear include McFly, The Sweet, Slade, and Bruce Foxtons from the Jam.

You can pick up more details here.

The festival is a good asset to the town. Brings in a lot of money and business to the town, and generally shows Whitehaven at its best. Usually its a good day/weekend out, I like watching the air displays myself.
Its a shame about the weather though, I only hope it does not dampen the atmosphere of the event too much.

Entirely agree.

My new boss asked on a conference call this morning if any of use were doing anything interesting this weekend. I told him about the festival and he said that this time next year he'll have to hold a team meeting in Whitehaven so we could all attend!

good VC skills!

Normally I can't do that, I can never seem to convince people in Manchester to do X when I see them usually, I guess, because they see me as "the man on the telly" much like I see them. I nearly always have to go down there, when I do that, then I have never yet failed.

I've not had too many people come up to Whitehaven to see me, though a few have come half way - Penrith is a good meeting point as it's on both the West Coast Main Line and at the junction of the A66 and M6.

Southerers won't visit the Radiation Coast, why not?

Many thousands of people, some of them Southerners, did visit Whitehaven last weekend for the festival, and it looked to me like they were having a damn good time.

If you bring a geiger counter to Whitehaven you'll find less radiation here than comes from the granite in the rocks in Cornwall.

The main thing stopping people from coming to Whitehaven is distance. I could add a few comments on the effectiveness or lack of it of Copeland Borough Council's attempts to promote tourism, but I'll save that for another time.

I always thought it was the fact that the council wait until the "tourist" summer season before deciding its a really great idea to dig up the A595 and A66 at the same time, causing huge tailbacks.
