The idea that fuel and car taxes could be used to give people an incentice to reduce emissions isn't intrinsically a bad one.

It's the idea that you can keep putting those duties up year after year without consequences that is a good example of something so stupid that only a very clever person could believe it.

Like privatising our utilities and expecting the companies to operate for the public good.

I expect utilities which have been privatised especially those which were also made subject to competition, to operate in their own interests by offering a decent service and better value for money so that their customers come back and use them again rather than go to the competition and they don't go bankrupt.

And funnily enough, every utility to which this applies is vastly more efficient than it was when it was nationalised. Even the ones we most moan about. (I'm just old enough to remember the old nationalised British Rail - it was far worse than Virgin Trains.)
