Investing in Britain's roads

Britain's roads have not been adequately maintained and it is time to put more resources into putting that right. That's why the government is launching several major road investment programmes - putting some of the tax paid by road users into actually maintaining and improving the road network,

In Cumbria this will finally include action on the A595. One of the schemes mentioned in the panel below is to improve the A595 at Grizebeck, and there will also shortly be a consultation on a proposed Whitehaven Relief Road.

Under funded????????????

how on earth are they?????

120 per vehicle in road tax, 59p per litre on fuel duty, plus the VAT on Fuel, Plus the VAT on fuel duty.

How on earth can any person ever say they are underfunded and keep a straight face???

"Under-funded" in the graphic above was a reference to how much Labour actually spent on the roads, not how much revenue they raised by taxing road users!

The fact that, as you have just demonstrated, such vast amounts of money are taken from the people who use the roads, which are certainly not under-TAXED, makes it all the harder to defend the fact that not enough of that money has been used to maintain and repair the roads.


I was never a supporter of "hypothecated taxes" which means ring-fencing the money from particular taxes for particular purposes, but after 18 months as a county councillor and therefor a member of a highways authority, I am starting to change my mind.

Quote of the day 24th July 2020

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer.
