"Religion is like a pair of shoes.....Find one that fits for you, but don't make me wear your shoes.”

What percentage of the population choose their religion?

In this country, and in the sense that most people would agree with the George Carlin quote and act on it, I don't think many people at all are pressured into practicing a religion they don't like or believe in, so the answer to your question would be well over 90%.

Sadly in some countries in the world, as we saw with recent shocking cases in Sudan and Pakistan, changing your religion can result in a death sentence. In such countries it is arguable that the answer to your question is 0%.

Which is barbaric, and that is why I put this quote up.

The churches are empty and closing by the week, those who haven't been indoctrinated into Chrtiianity and mainstream religions have chosen the new religion Consumerism.

There are plenty of people who choose not to be actively religious, and that is their right, though I don't think that many would describe Consumerism as their religion, for all that Ewan MacGregor's character made an amusing joke to that effect in the film version of "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen."

But if you go to most of the churches I know on a Sunday morning, you won't find them all that empty.
