Copeland unites in respect

The Ceremonies throughout Copeland today as a mark of respect for the victims of last week's shooting tragedies were very strongly supported.

I attended the very moving ceremony at St Nicholas's gardens in Whitehaven: there were about 4,000 people there. I understand that the other six ceremonies held at the same time from Frizington to Millom were also very well supported by the local communities.

One of the best things about West Cumbria is an incredibly strong community spirit. This area will get through it's grief at last week's murders, as it has come through previous terrible events, though people supporting one another. That was very evident today.

I was there too and was humbled to the point of tears when the taxi drivers blew their horns en masse. we will never forget but now is the time to move on.

Quote of the day 24th July 2020

I was moved to put the passage below forward as a quote today when I saw a horrible post on twitter from someone writing that it was "excellent" that someone who took a different view from her about Brexit had died. I won't write which way round it was so that all the Remain supporters can assume the post was from a Brexit fanatic welcoming the death of a remainer and all the Leavers can assume it was a Remainiac welcoming one less Brexiteer. There's been plenty of nasty stuff on both sides but if you catch anyone of your own viewpoint  posting something like that who might listen to you, please do call them out on it - and point out that they're giving everyone on your side of the argument a bad name.
