Please note that the post below was published more than ten year ago on 21st November 2009 Nick Herbert MP, shadow cabinet member for the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, was in Cumbria this morning to see the areas affected by the flooding. He writes on Conservative Home about his visit. Here is an extract. I’ve been in Cumbria today to see the areas affected by the floods. I arrived early in Keswick where I met officials from the Environment Agency. Although the river levels had fallen considerably and homes were no longer flooded, the damage to homes had been done. And the water which had got into houses wasn’t just from the river – it was foul water which had risen from the drains. I talked to fire crews who were pumping flood water back into the river, and discovered that they were from Tyne & Wear and Lancashire. OK, been saying for months that a renegotiation requiring treaty change is not possible before 2017. This is down to the time required for a the due process.
Cameron then narrows down the renegotiation to a single issue which is Immigration, or more accurately "benefits to migrants". which all fall under part 3 of TFEU. Now to amend Only part 3 of TFEU can be done using the "simplified method" of Article 48 of TEU. So there is a way of getting a "fudge" on a single issue. which is a treaty change, but not really one of any significance. Now we are down to one single issue of part 3 of TFEU the press start to report that its impossible timing
Now call me as cynical as you like, but I can see whats coming, low and behold we have the PM negotiatior who got an "impossible" treaty change. and the worst part is the press will back it no end, i can see the build up to it right there.
Ukip putting all eggs in the immigration basket and attempting to dig a grave for the out campaign (not that they ever were part of that, but its death by association)
Do you ever have days Chris, When you wake up in the morning and think, I just dont want to live on Earth any more, Im moving to Mars.
OH WHOOPIE. Wilson has nothing on you Dave.
Occasionally - usually when I realise that someone like Ed Miliband might be our next Prime Minister (and I had rather more days like that when I realised Tony Blair or Gordon Brown actually was.)
We shall see, but I doubt very much if benefits for migrants are the only things DC negotiates on.
