Sorry a little off topic, but i thought this was quite revealing. An American friend let me know about this article in the Washington Post The thing that really jumps out at me is that UKIP are internationally recognised as an "Anti Immigration Party" - I think Alex Salmond and Nigel Farage should get together and start teaching a new training course, it could be like a minimum entry qualification for each of their parties, you must score at least 80% in the exam at the end of How to lose a referendum 101

It is of course to the Conservative advantage, not so much the story of a constituent not knowing that Westminster Cathedral is not a mosque, but more the fact UKIP are playing an entire strategy for the election based solely on immigration. First of all this is not really such an important issue, i know it looks it at the moment but only because its the game the ukip are playing. It can die down as quickly as it reared up. But also putting all your eggs into one basket allows Dave to easily outflank him.

the biggest hurdle to winning an IN OUT referendum on EU membership is not actually defeating the IN side. That is actually quite simple, no the biggest problems come from having to constantly fight some people on the OUT side.

Indeed. I had seen pm Guido's blog, and been most amused by, the story of the UKIP branch who put out a tweet in which they mistook Westminster Cathedral for a mosque, and the subsequent "Things that are not Mosques" thread on twitter.

A strategy based only on opposition to immigration can win a few protest votes, maybe even a couple of by-elections, but you are right that it is not enough to govern Britain and therefore will not win a General Election, or a referendum.
