Be careful if you are driving today:

There is heavy rain in many parts of Cumbria and the North West today and the Met office has warned travellers to be careful.

There are already large amounts of standing water on many of the county's roads, and so motorists are being urged to drive carefully.

The Met Office yellow alert predicts that between 25mm and 40mm of rain could fall in six to 12 hours, with as much as 70mm possible by the end of the day.

A spokesman for the forecaster said: "Rain is likely to be both persistent and heavy at times."

The rain is expected to ease during this afternoon and evening.
