Coronavus/Covid-19 update

At the time of posting there are five confirmed cases of residents of Cumbria who have tested positive for Covid-19. All are now either in hospital outside the county or self-isolating at home.

I understand that three of these individuals recently returned from Italy, one is the partner of one of those three and the fifth is a contact of a previous UK case.

The Prime Minister held a further COBR meeting yesterday to discuss additional measures that may be required to delay the spread of Coronavirus in the UK. I have received the following statement.

  • "Public safety remains our top priority, and while we are still in the 'contain' phase, we are doing everything in our power so we are ready to delay and mitigate this threat.
  • We will respond with a proportionate Emergency Bill with the right measures to deal with the impact of a widespread Coronavirus outbreak. This will include provision for volunteers to be given additional employment safeguards so they can volunteer in the event of a widespread pandemic without the fear of losing their jobs.
  • We plan for the worst and work for the best, and the NHS is working around the clock to fight this virus. Every person has a role to play in managing its spread and our advice to the public remains the same: to wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds."
