David Cameron visits Cumbrian flood-hit areas

Prime Minister David Cameron has met floods victims in Carlisle and pledged support for storm-ravaged Cumbria.

He saw for himself damage in the Warwick Road area of the city as a huge rescue and recovery  operation continues.Responding to questions about what support the Government will give the county, Mr Cameron said:

"We will look at what's been done, look at what's happened on this occasion and look at what needs to be done.

"A lot was spent after 2005, rightly so, to protect Carlisle. I've seen the flood defences myself and they're pretty impressive. It's just difficult to deal with 14ins of rain in 24 hours."

As well as meeting some affected by the weather, he has also spoken with some of the emergency services involved in the weekend's dramatic rescues.
