Brexit update
The Prime Minister and President von der Leyen spoke on the phone yesterday and have agreed to continue trade negotiations this week – with both sides agreeing to go the extra mile to conclude a deal.
- Yesterday, the Prime Minister discussed with President von der Leyen the major unresolved topics. Negotiating teams have been working day and night over recent days.
- Despite the exhaustion after almost a year of negotiations, despite the fact that deadlines have been missed over and over, the UK government thinks it is responsible at this point to go the extra mile. Talks will continue to see whether an agreement can even at this late stage be reached.
- The Prime Minister has been clear that we cannot sacrifice what it means to be a sovereign and independent nation in order to secure a deal.
- If a suitable compromise cannot be reached, Britain will leave the transition period on 1st January trading on World Trade Organisation terms.
