Russia and Ukraine continued

As I mentioned in my post yesterday about the PM's visit to West Cumbria, the Prime Minister spoke with US President Joe Biden yesterday about the situation in Ukraine, with both leaders agreeing there remains a crucial window for diplomacy and for Russia to step back from its threats towards Ukraine.

  • Both the US and UK governments have intelligence suggesting Russia is now prepared to invade Ukraine at any minute, but both are also clear that there still remains a way for Russia to step back from the brink through de-escalation and diplomatic channels.
  • Yesterday, the Prime Minister and President Biden agreed there is still a crucial window for diplomacy and for Russia to step back from its threats towards Ukraine. They also agreed Western allies remain united, including imposing a significant package of sanctions should Russian aggression escalate, and reiterated the need for European countries to reduce their dependence on Russian gas.
  • Both Britain and the USA are clear that any further incursion into Ukraine would result in a long and drawn out conflict for Russia, with far reaching damage for both Russia and the world.
