DC on West Cumberland Hospital

The Prime Minister was asked at PMQs yesterday about the West Cumberland Hospital. This was his reply (Source: They Work For You website, which took it from Hansard)

David Cameron (The Prime Minister; Witney, Conservative)

"The hon. Gentleman is right to say that I saw for myself what an excellent job this hospital does and how important it is. The clinical commissioning group total revenue available this year is an increase of 2.3%—£663 million. That is because this Government decided to protect NHS spending and not cut it, and that is why important hospital developments can go ahead."

I don't really think the problems Whitehaven faces come so much from the central government. I think they come more from the attitude of our Achilles heel, which of course is Copeland Borough Council.

For readers who dont know.
How bad are Copeland council? - well lets just say a man born in west cumbria hospital in whitehaven, lived here all his life, is willing to sell not only his home, but also his soul, by becoming a Jameater. That speaks for itself

mind you I could write pages and pages on the sheer incompetency of Copeland council, Just to take one example, there is currently under construction buildings at Albion Sqare whitehaven, to house 1200 staff from sellafield, not only will this bring the entire town to a standstill at around 07:30 each day (when local shops want deliverys) but also again aroun 3:30 PM too. there is parking for around 400 cars, but with 1200 staff, well that works well then, it could not be further from the train station if you planned it. All of this and then the unanswered point, you see the obvious place to build this, at least to any one with half a working brain, was Weatlakes.

I guess the rugby ground and the asda fiasco were just not good enough for copeland

Jim, Highways are Cumbria CC's responsibility so any problems are down to them and nothing to do with Copeland BC. Copeland BC maybe did plan and approve Albion Square, but all problems that follow are nothing to do with them. This may appear to you (an me) to be a moronic attitude to take but unfortunately this is the Council’s attitude.

I was on Copeland BC when the decisions were taken (I raised a number of issues about the way the project was implemented, though I had considerable sympathy for the objectives.)

The officers of Copeland BC, and the majority Labour group which took their advice, believe that the Albion Square project will help the overall traffic situation in Copeland as a whole by taking hundreds of cars off the A595 during rush hour.

They might even be right, but this would have been more likely had they paid attention to some of the concerns which we raised with them at the time about the parking and traffic issues in Whitehaven itself.

Unfortunately the administration of CBC is not good at listening.
