Nicky Morgan writes about what every parent wants for their child ...
Education Secretary Nicky Morgan writes:
"Every parent wants their child to have the best start in life. They don't want them to go to a failing school - or one that's coasting. They don't want them to leave primary school unable to read, write or add up. But under Labour, schools were allowed to hide behind artificially inflated exam results. Poor performance was accepted and we slid down the international league tables. Parents, and children, were let down. Working together with our incredible teachers, we are turning things around. With a more rigorous curriculum, and a refusal to tolerate failure, we're raising standards in schools - and a million more children are now being taught in schools ranked 'good' or 'outstanding'. But there is still more to do. We are determined to tackle illiteracy and innumeracy. Getting English and Maths right has to be at the core of our education system. So we will expect every pupil by the age of 11 to know their times tables off by heart, to perform long division and complex multiplication, and to be able to read a novel and write a short story. This is about giving every child the chance to master the basics and succeed in life. Recently, I've watched my own son learn to read and it's been a magical experience. I want to make sure every parent in our country experiences that too. So please, get behind our plans to build a Britain that gives every child the best start in life: Thank you, Nicky Morgan Education Secretary |
