The latest DAESH atrocity
Every time people are tempted to think that the monsters of DAESH - who describe themselves as "Islamic State" though they are neither Islamic nor a state - could not sink any lower, they are proved wrong.
As if they have not made enough enemies by massacring hundreds of prisoners of war, cutting off the heads of innocent America, British, and most recently Japanese hostages none of whom were enemies of Islam, throwing gay people off tall buildings and machine-gunning teenage football fans, DAESH now claim that the Jordanian pilot whose release they have cynically been pretending to negotiate has been executed by being burned alive.
And according to Jordanian news sources this took place a month ago and the entire pretence at negotiation was a cruel sham.
There is a limit to how long you can continue to thrive while imposing fear, terror and massacre on the rest of the world. Clever dictatorships which lasted for decades, as diverse as the Soviet Union or Franco's Spain, could be very brutal to their enemies but always made sure that for every family they killed or terrorised there were ten who did well out of their rule.
But those, from Caligula to Hitler, from Robespierre to Saddam Hussein, who made the world hate them and ruled almost entirely by fear, have never held power forever: sooner or later for every such regime comes a moment of weakness when the rest of the world combines against them or the people who they have ruled see a chance to overthrow them.
Sooner or later the same thing will happen to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and the butchers of DAESH.
It will come sooner, and fewer people will die, if everyone else in the world realises quickly that just as Hitler and his black-clad SS murderers had to be stopped, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and his black-clad jihadi murderers have to be stopped too.
There was no point trying to appease Hitler and the Nazis, who would come for you sooner or later whatever you did and wherever you tried to hide; there is no point trying to appease these people either. They will not stop until they are utterly defeated or until everyone else in the world has joined them, died, or been enslaved.
Godwin's law notwithstanding, this is one group of people who really do deserve to be compared to Nazis. Let's just hope that their defeat comes well before they kill anything like as many people, or come to pose such an existential threat to civilisation, as Nazi Germany.
