Cumbria Coronavirus update

Cumbria County council, in line, I understand, with other county councils around the country, has suspended physical council meetings, initially until 14th April.

There have been attempts made to look at holding meetings by Skype: in the world of business people have been holding meetings by conference call for two decades and Cumbria Conservatives have been doing so since I became area chairman in 2011 so local government is really are behind the curve if we can't get this going. There may be some changes to legislation required for this and I hope the government is looking at those changes.

Around the county individuals and groups are setting up networks of volunteers to help keep an eye on the old and the isolated: for example in St Bees I am told that the entire parish is covered by fourteen volunteers and details will be in the next parish magazine.

Efforts are being made to ensure that as most schools close after today, the children of NHS, social care and other priority staff will have access to childcare and education from Monday. Later next week this will be extended to the children of other key workers as their status is clarified by the government.
