Protecting the most vulnerable

At the weekend the Government unveiled a major new package of measures to protect up to 1.5 million people in England who are at the highest risk from Coronavirus – enabling them to shield themselves and stay at home.

  • Public safety and making sure that those most at risk from the virus continue to get the support they need throughout this period is the Government’s top priority. People should stay at home, protect our NHS and save lives.

  • That is why the Government is urging up to 1.5 million identified by the NHS as being extremely vulnerable – those with specific underlying health conditions – to stay at home for at least 12 weeks to protect themselves.

  • People identified will be contacted by the NHS this week and soon receive detailed advice on behalf of their GP practice or specialist on how best to protect themselves. The government will introduce a helpline so people know exactly how to care for themselves and others in the coming months.

  • The Government will also establish a new Local Support System to ensure those individuals self-isolating at home and who are without a support network of friends and family will receive basic groceries and medicine.

  • It is vital that all of us do everything we can to protect ourselves, our families and our friends from being impacted by the virus. But for those who are at the highest risk in our society, we will need to go further. Working together, we can guarantee they are never alone.
