Coronavirus update
The government continues to work around the clock to tackle Coronavirus, making it our number one priority to keep people safe.
We are sorry to hear that health minister Nadine Dorries MP has been tested positive for Coronavirus and we wish her a speedy recovery. As soon as she was informed she took all advised precautions and has been self-isolating at home.
Public Health England has started detailed contact tracing and the department and her parliamentary office are closely following their advice.
Public safety remains our top priority, and while we are still in the ‘contain’ phase, we are doing everything we can to combat this outbreak, based on the very latest scientific and medical advice.
We are taking various actions to slow the spread of this disease in order to reduce the strain it places on the NHS. We urge people to do the right thing and take time off if they are feeling unwell as they normally would.
Statutory sick pay will be paid from the first day off sick rather than day four and the government plans to make sure there is some compensations for business for the impact of this. the government is also looking at how to make sure self-employed people who self-isolate do not suffer for doing the right thing
We have also announced a new Taskforce to bolster local responses to Coronavirus, looking at local health plans to ensure that communities get the support that they need to tackle the virus at a local level – particularly for the vulnerable and elderly.
We have a truly brilliant health service – and our NHS will continue to have the full support of the Prime Minister and this Government as it continues to tackle this virus on the frontline. The chancellor promised in his budget speech that of more resources are needed they will be provided. Together can we slow the spread of this virus and protect the most vulnerable in society.
