Arson in Egremont

I was sorry to learn that there has been a succession of arson attacks in the Egremont area.

This isn't just a matter of damage to property and inconvenience to local people when the services affected are withdrawn and disrupted, as the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service has rightly pointed out, it puts lives at risk. As the Watch manager for Egremont, David McDowell, told the Whitehaven News, "Incidents like this tie up emergency appliances which could be needed elsewhere."

There have been several fires at Egremont's recycling banks, which have forced Copeland Borough Council to removed this service from the car park at Beck Green on safety grounds. Then one of the park benches at Egremont Castle was set on fire: the attending fire crew found that the fire had been deliberately started using an accelerant.

"There's no question that it was deliberate" said Mr McDowell.

This totally unacceptable behaviour which puts the community at risk is not just the responsibility of the idiots who actually do it.

It's also important that anyone who observes anything strange or suspicious should report it.

For instance, it's very likely that the individuals who carried out these arson attacks will have gone home smelling of petrol or other chemicals used.

Anyone who knows anything about these attacks, or has seen, heard (or smelled!) anything which might give the authorities a lead they could use to stop this is strongly urged  to go to the police.
