New economic figures released

The Conservatives' economic priority is to protect jobs while taking necessary steps to halt the spread of the virus.

  • Today’s figures show that Britain's economy was recovering over the Summer, but started to slow going into Autumn. The steps the government has had to take since then to halt the spread of the virus mean growth is likely to slowed further.

  • But there are reasons to be cautiously optimistic – including promising news on tests and vaccines. The government's economic priority continues to be jobs – that’s why  furlough has now been extended through to March, and the government has also set up schemes like Kickstart which has already created more than 19,000 new roles for young people.

  • There are still hard times ahead, but the government will continue to support people through this and ensure nobody is left without hope or opportunity.
