Pot, Kettle Black award of the century
Whatever you think about Donald Trump's decision to depose President Maduro of Venezuela
- and I think it is perfectly possible at one and the same time to both consider the Maduro regime illegitimate and have concerns about the USA just unilaterally walking into someone else's country and removing him -
it took pretty extraordinary cheek for the Russian Federation regime to condemn it in the language they did.
This wasn't just a candidate for the Pot calling the Kettle Black award for the week, but for the decade and the century.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign affairs have stated that
"The US committed an act of armed aggression against Venezuela, which gives rise to deep concern & warrants condemnation.
The pretexts used to justify these actions are untenable.
Russia reaffirms its solidarity with the Venezuelan people."
Seriously, these people should quit diplomacy and go into comedy. How can they possibly make that criticism of the US actions in Venezuela and not apply the same logic to their own actions in Ukraine?
Putin's illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine was the epitome of "armed aggression."
I'm not convinced that the pretexts used by the Trump administration are sufficient to justify walking into someone else's country either, but they are infinitely closer to the truth than anything the Russians have been able to produce to justify their invasion of Ukraine.
The Russians say they have solidarity with the Venezuelan people - without apparently noticing that a lot of the latter are dancing in the streets of Caracas to welcome what Trump has done - but instead of showing solidarity with the Ukrainian people they have been murdering Ukrainian men, women and children for four years.
The main difference between Trump's successful attempt to kidnap President Maduro and Russia's unsuccessful attempt to kidnap President Zelensky and conquer Ukraine is that the American operation appears to have been carried out by highly competent professionals who completed it in 24 hours with minimal loss of life on either side and the Russian operation was botched by utterly incompetent butchers who have little to show for four years of war except the loss of at least a hundred and fifty thousand human lives - and that's a very conservative estimate for the number of confirmed deaths on their own side alone.
