Cracking down on people smugglers

Yesterday, the Home Secretary signed an agreement with her French counterpart to tackle illegal Channel crossings by small boats - better protecting our borders and national security.
  • Despite all of the action taken by law enforcement to prevent these illegal Channel crossings, including intercepting boats, making arrests, returning people back to France and putting the criminals responsible behind bars – the numbers continue to increase.

  • Yesterday, in her visit to France, the Home Secretary reached an agreement to create a joint intelligence cell to combat migrant smuggling and crack down on gangs facilitating illegal crossings and people smuggling. The new unit will collate, centralise and analyse operational intelligence to prevent crossings from taking place and to dismantle the gangs behind them.

  • We pay tribute to the work of law enforcement agencies on both sides of the Channel, who are working tirelessly to stop these boats from making the dangerous journey.
The people smuggling gangs who prey on those who want to come to this country are putting their lives at risk, and the best way to stop their activities from costing lives is to make sure that people know that if you want to come to Britain, your best chance is to apply to come here through legal means. Letting people think that they can get here by paying their life savings to a people smuggler has already got far too many of them killed.
