Walking and cycling for everyone

Today, the Prime Minister  announced the details of a £2 billion plan to boost walking and cycling throughout England, helping to tackle some of the biggest health and environmental challenges that we face.
  • Tackling the causes of ill health, not just the symptoms, is vital to help reduce demand on the NHS, and taking up cycling has been proven to offer huge benefits for people’s physical and mental health.

  • The govenment is overhauling cycling and walking in England by providing funds for additional infrastructure, such as cycling lanes, bike racks and on-street storage. We will also be promoting cycling in schools and providing bicycle repair vouchers and are making cycle training available for every child and adult who wants it.

  • From helping people get fit and healthy and lowering their risk of illness, to improving air quality and cutting congestion, cycling and walking have a huge role to play in tackling some of the biggest health and environmental challenges that we face.

Local councils (including CCC) are putting in bids for schemes to make it easier for people to cycle and walk to work, or to health or leisure facilities.

The top two bids submitted by County Councillors in Copeland were for
  1. Better foot and cycle routes to West Cumberland Hospital from surrounding homes and facilities
  2. Better and safer ways for pedestrians and cyclists to cross Duddon Bridge.
