Fantastic news for rail transport users in the North of England.

Delivering on our promise to level up the country’s infrastructure, today the Conservative government has announced a further £589 million investment package to kickstart rail upgrades across the North of England.
  • Levelling-up opportunity will be key in our recovery from coronavirus, and our long-term success will rely on having world-class infrastructure in all parts of the country.

  • That is why we have announced £589 million for work to upgrade and electrify the Transpennine main line, and we have also set up a new council – led by the Transport Secretary – to give northern leaders a direct line to the Government to further accelerate transport projects.

  • This will ensure that as we build back better after coronavirus, passengers will be able to get the modern, reliable transport network they deserve as quickly as possible.

I'm really pleased to learn this, railways in the North of England need the same sort of investment which has been put into rail in some other parts of the country. On my last visit to my former home city of St Albans I was stunned by how much the rail links  - one of the busiest in Europe - along the line from Bedford to London and the South Coast had improved. It' high time similar improvements were made in Cumbria and the rest of the North West.
