Fred Gleaves RIP

I was sorry to learn that a long-serving servant of the community in Copeland and Millom, Copeland Councillor Fred Gleaves, has died today after a long illness.

Some councillors make a lot of speeches - Freddie was not one of these. In the time he and I served together on Copeland Council I can't recall hearing his voice in the council chamber.

But I heard it on many other occasions and he did an awful lot of hard work for his community behind the scenes. The proof that just because he didn't make lots of speeches this did not make him a bad councillor can be seen from the strong personal vote he always had from his constituents. Fred usually topped the poll in his ward even in elections in which other good Conservative candidates failed to get elected in the same ward.

He will be fondly remembered and I will be one of many people who miss him.

Rest in Peace.
