TWELVE HOURS TO GO! REMINDER THAT WEEKEND CLOSURES OF THE A595 AT MORESBY START THIS EVENING!

Final reminder: the A595 will be closed North of Whitehaven at weekends for work at the Moresby embankment for several months, starting at 6pm THIS EVENING.

The section of road closed will include the Distington by-pass: it will run from the Pelican Garage to the Distington roundabout, from 8pm on Friday evening until 5am on Monday morning for an expected ten weekends from 12th May 2023 (today!) to Monday 24th July. The road will be closed every weekend between those dates except for the late May bank holiday weekend, 26th to 29th May.

This £16 million work programme has been billed as an improvement scheme: it will include some improvements  but the main reason is to deal with a drainage issue which would eventually have undermined the foundations of the road and made it unsafe.

This is going to cause a great deal of disruption on the roads over much of West Cumberland at weekends for the next three months, but the alternative would have been much worse. The work is being done in a planned way at weekends only with notice given.  If the problem had been ignored the road would eventually have started to collapse and would have had to be completely closed in an emergency manner, causing complete transport chaos throughout the area.
